Volunteer Programs
As part of offering authentic opportunities to engage and interact with local communities,
Calabash Tours offers Volunteer placements. Our first Volunteers arrived in early 2006.
We have initiated community partnerships with 7 local primary schools, as well as a community care, home based care HIV/AIDS programme. These two areas, of HIV and education have been identified by ourselves as areas of great need, in consultation with township communities.
Our volunteer stays are from a minimum of 4 weeks. They are ethical and responsible, and you can expect full disclosure on how your volunteer fees are spent. And you can choose a range of accommodation options, from staying with a family in the community where you are working (which we recommend) to staying in a hotel, B&B or even back packer hostel.
While the volunteer programme forms part of
Calabash Tours, it is structured to primarily benefit the local community, the volunteer, and then ourselves. Volunteering has become a big new trend in community tourism, but not all operators offering opportunities are concerned about the local community, and much of the money remains in the First World. These unethical volunteer programmes are being sold as any other product, with the obvious negative impacts.
If you are interested,
send us an email, but be prepared to undergo a security check (as our projects involve children and vulnerable adults) as well as filling in an application form.
We assure you; your working with us will result in a positive impact for you and the local community.
